A 65-year-old man wearing an Israeli flag pin was severely injured in an attack late on Sunday evening in Höchberg, near Würzburg in southern Germany. The victim, a member of the German-Israeli Society in Würzburg, suffered head injuries and a broken bone after the suspect allegedly kicked him in the head. He was treated in an intensive care unit but is not in life-threatening condition.
Police arrested the 20-year-old Syrian national at the scene. The suspect, who had prior convictions including assault, remains in pretrial custody. A police officer was lightly injured during the arrest.
Prosecutors in Munich and police are investigating anti-Semitic and Islamist motives behind the assault. Bavaria's central anti-Semitism commissioner for the justice system has taken over the case on charges of attempted murder.
