Bavarian state premier Markus Söder was struck by a tomato thrown by a man who leapt from a bush and ran towards him during a public event on Sunday in Bernau am Chiemsee, southern Germany. Söder, who was attending celebrations marking the 1,100th anniversary of the municipality, was hit on the head but remained uninjured.
State criminal police officers overpowered the 31-year-old German attacker and took him into custody at the scene. Söder wiped the tomato remnants from his ear and continued with his scheduled appearance, accompanied by federal lawmaker Daniela Ludwig and state legislators Daniel Artmann and Sebastian Friesinger.
Police in nearby Rosenheim declined to comment on the incident. Söder later posted a photograph from the anniversary celebration on X without mentioning the attack.
