A 16-year-old former student is under investigation for two counts of attempted murder after a knife attack at a secondary school in Schongau, Bavaria, where he allegedly severely injured two 13-year-old girls on the school grounds on 10 July 2026.
The Bavarian Central Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism has taken over the case citing suspected extremist motives. Investigators are examining a letter by the suspect containing slurs against multiple religious communities, demographic groups, classmates, and teachers. The Croatian national also fired a handgun that subsequently jammed during the attack; police seized the weapon, a knife, and ammunition. The teenager told investigators he had obtained the pistol on the darknet.
The suspect, who remains in pre-trial detention, was already under investigation in 2025 for threatening classmates and glorifying mass shootings on social media.
