A 34-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences following an armed robbery at an off-licence in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, that left a staff member stabbed and a police officer punched.
The incident unfolded on the evening of 31 July when, according to police, a man entered the store, seized a female worker from behind and held a screwdriver to her throat while demanding money. She was forced to the rear of the premises where a male colleague was also working. Both employees were made to hand over cash before the attacker began punching and kicking the male worker, stabbing him in the side with the screwdriver. The pair escaped when their assailant became distracted.
Officers spotted a suspect matching the description nearby and a foot chase ensued, ending in a struggle in which a police officer was struck. The suspect faces charges including robbery, aggravated burglary, false imprisonment, threats to kill, criminal damage, common assault and assault on police. He is scheduled to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court on Monday.
