Italy’s Council of Ministers convened Monday at Palazzo Chigi to approve a bridge decree targeting diesel costs, after the government signalled broader competition reforms for the fuel retail sector. The measures aim to keep both petrol and diesel below 2 euros per litre through August, Massimo Garavaglia said, with a follow-up mobile excise mechanism drawn from July’s excess VAT receipts expected later.
The intervention comes as national self-service petrol reached 1.982 euros per litre, its highest since October 2023, while diesel climbed to 2.185 euros, nearing its March 2022 peak. Q8 raised recommended petrol prices by one cent and diesel by two, and Tamoil added two cents on petrol and three on diesel. Highway self-service averages stand at 2.071 euros for petrol and 2.255 for diesel.
Crude benchmarks offered limited relief, with Brent slipping below 91 dollars and WTI under 84 dollars a barrel.
