TotalEnergies is reinstating a fuel price cap across its French network, limiting petrol to €1.99 per litre and diesel to €2.25 at approximately 3,300 stations. On three August holiday weekends, diesel will also sell for €1.99, including at motorway service areas.
The move follows a public appeal by French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu for the energy major to share profits with consumers. TotalEnergies previously imposed temporary caps in May and June before scaling them back to rural and motorway stations after an easing in prices. With the announcement on Wednesday, Brent crude had surged to $94.15 a barrel and SP95-E10 petrol averaged €2.026 per litre, up more than 4% in a week.
Across the border, Germany ruled out new driver relief measures despite rising fuel costs, government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said on 20 July.
