European motorists are facing rising fuel costs as tax adjustments and geopolitical tensions push pump prices higher across the continent. In Spain, gasoline rose 5.56% this week to 1.517 euros per litre, while diesel climbed 2.13% to 1.535 euros, following the end of a reduced 10% fuel VAT rate in late June. Madrid has responded with a phased fuel duty cut of 15 cents per litre this month, tapering through September.
German prices have also surged, with diesel reaching a national daily average of 2.012 euros per litre and Super E10 hitting 2.060 euros. Reports attribute the spike to escalating U.S.-Iran tensions and instability around the Strait of Hormuz.
In Italy, self-service gasoline on national roads averaged 1.869 euros per litre, while motorway diesel stood at 2.052 euros, reflecting a broader regional trend of mounting energy costs.
