Belgium will introduce a mandatory road vignette for all vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes starting 1 May 2027, with annual prices ranging from €90 to €125 depending on a vehicle's CO2 emissions.
Under the plan, which must be validated by the Flemish government on Friday, electric cars will pay €90 per year while pre-2005 vehicles face the top rate of €125. A day pass will also be available, priced from €8.10 for electric vehicles to €11.25 for the most polluting cars. The digital vignette, linked to a car's licence plate, can be purchased online or at petrol stations. Regional governments estimate the scheme will generate roughly €200 million annually, with Flanders alone budgeting €130 million in revenue.
The proposal has drawn opposition from the Netherlands, and similar toll schemes have faced legal hurdles in Europe: Germany's planned motorway vignette was struck down by the European Court of Justice in 2019.
