Portugal's Socialist Party leader José Luís Carneiro criticised the PSD/CDS-PP coalition government on Sunday, accusing it of profiting from a fuel price increase taking effect Monday. According to industry association ANAREC, diesel prices are set to rise by 9 cents per litre while petrol will climb 3.5 cents. Energy regulator DGEG forecasts average simple 95 petrol reaching €2.009 per litre and diesel hitting €2.058.
Carneiro said that since the Iran war began in March 2026, Portuguese drivers have paid more than 44 cents extra per litre of diesel and over 30 cents more for petrol. He also claimed that in the two years since the current government took office, consumers have paid more than €1.048 billion in fuel taxes alone.
