A severe heatwave gripping central Europe reaches its peak on Thursday and Friday, with forecasters warning of violent thunderstorms and temperatures approaching 39 degrees Celsius.

Germany is experiencing highs between 33 and 38 degrees on Wednesday, with the eastern half expected to see 34 to 39 degrees by Thursday afternoon before severe thunderstorms bring heavy rain, damaging winds and hail. Austria's heatwave peaks on Friday, after GeoSphere issued an orange-level warning for extreme heat and Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland recorded up to 38 degrees.

The intense weather extends northward, with southern and western Finland reaching heatwave levels on Thursday and thunderstorms with strong wind gusts possible nationwide on Friday, as the heat follows record-breaking June readings across the region.
