A sweltering heatwave is set to engulf Central Europe from Tuesday, with forecasters warning that temperatures could approach or exceed national records across Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria.
Hot air will flow into central Europe from the southwest starting next week, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute said, pushing Czech temperatures as high as 36 degrees Celsius by the turn of August. In Germany, mercury could climb above 35 degrees widely by Thursday, with some models projecting peaks near 41 degrees along the Rhine — threatening the national record of 41.8 degrees set in Drewitz on June 27. Poland will see thunderstorms and hail sweep across western regions on Sunday before the heat intensifies.
The extremes follow record-breaking June readings, including 41.9 degrees recorded at Doksany in the Czech Republic. Austria, which logged 33 consecutive days above 30 degrees, expects another surge above 30 degrees in Vienna by early August, with some models forecasting up to 42 degrees in Germany by August 5.
