Five people were wounded when gunfire erupted early Saturday on the campus of Virginia State University in Ettrick, Virginia, just days before the start of the fall semester. One victim remains in critical condition while four others sustained non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Police responded to the campus south of Richmond in the early hours of Saturday morning local time. University officials said multiple suspects were involved in the incident, and the campus was placed on lockdown as a search for those responsible continued.
Classes at the historically Black university, which enrolls roughly 5,000 students and was founded in 1882, are scheduled to begin Monday. The shooting follows a separate mass shooting in rural northern Michigan on Friday that left six people dead, including the suspected gunman.
