None of the eight Danish swimmers who competed on the first day of the European long course championships in Paris advanced to the semifinals, though Shawn Wolf and Mathias Christensen each set personal bests in the 100-metre breaststroke, clocking 1:01.99 and 1:02.06 respectively.
Denmark has sent 16 swimmers to the championships, which marks the first appearance of Russian and Belarusian athletes since 2021. European Aquatics decided in February to permit their participation as neutral athletes, a move opposed by Pia Johansen, chair of SvømDanmark.
The controversy adds to a busy period in Danish sport. The national speedway team has qualified for the World Championship final on 29 August in Warsaw, while Denmark is also sending 28 athletes to the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham from 10 to 16 August.
