Cristian Romero confirms Tottenham exit and Atletico Madrid move for £34.2m

· Sports GBRESPARG

Cristian Romero has confirmed his departure from Tottenham to join Atletico Madrid, finalising a transfer worth £34.2 million (€40m) with a 15 per cent sell-on clause after weeks of negotiations between the clubs.

The Argentina defender ends a five-year spell in north London that yielded 156 appearances and the 2025 Europa League title, though his final campaign was marred by two red cards and a knee injury that sidelined him for the last six matches. Romero, who acknowledged he 'wasn't perfect' during his tenure, was originally signed from Atalanta for around £42m in 2021.

Tottenham facilitated the sale having already secured defenders Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi. Romero's fee falls below the £50m Brighton paid for Luka Vuskovic earlier this summer.
