Atletico Madrid have opened discussions with Tottenham Hotspur over a transfer for captain Cristian Romero, with the Spanish club understood to be the defender's preferred destination. Spurs have yet to receive a formal offer, though personal terms are not expected to pose an obstacle and reports in Spain suggest an agreement has already been reached with the player.
Romero, 28, has attracted interest from multiple clubs this summer. Inter Milan are keen but must sell players before acting, while Arsenal categorically had their approach rejected as they seek a replacement for the injured William Saliba. Atletico manager Diego Simeone has long admired Romero, who played every match in Argentina's run to the World Cup final last month.
Tottenham's willingness to negotiate follows their signing of centre-backs Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi and a summer spending spree exceeding £200 million. Manager Roberto De Zerbi recently said he would respect players' wishes to leave. Romero signed a contract extension last summer running to 2029, having made 123 Premier League appearances since joining from Atalanta in 2022.
