Great Britain won gold in a European record 39.97 seconds as the mixed 4x100 metres relay debuted at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Saturday, with anchor Amy Hunt carrying the home team to victory.

Germany took silver in 40.11 seconds, adding to a strong sprint programme that saw Kevin Kranz and Heiko Gussmann earn silver with the men's relay earlier in the week and Owen Ansah claim the 200 metres title. Spain captured bronze in a national-record 40.42 with a team of Guillem Crespí, Maribel Pérez, Andoni Crespí and Jaël Bestué.

The result was a setback for the German women's relay, which failed to advance from the heats despite having won bronze at both the Paris 2024 Olympics and the Tokyo World Championships.
