Valter Lavitola has been arrested on a pre-trial detention order issued by a Rome judge, accused of ordering an October 2025 bombing outside the home of Sigfrido Ranucci in Pomezia, south of the Italian capital.

Prosecutors allege Lavitola orchestrated the attack using mafia methods, according to the warrant. The arrest was carried out by officers of the Carabinieri investigative unit. Lavitola, who declined to answer questions when summoned by prosecutors on 8 July 2026, had already been under investigation as the suspected mastermind.

The Rome court also issued an arrest warrant for Gomes Clesio Tavares, believed to be in Africa, for his alleged role in planning the bombing. Four other suspects, accused of carrying out the attack, were placed under precautionary measures in late June. The investigation is led by Rome chief prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi.
