Suspect detained in killing of Italian journalist Luigi Esposito

· Society ITA

Italian authorities have detained a suspect in the killing of journalist Luigi Esposito, after his charred remains were found in farmland near Eboli on 19 July. The Salerno prosecutor's office ordered the arrest on suspicion of murder, and Carabinieri, backed by the ROS technical investigations unit and the Puglia Hunters squadron, located the suspect hiding in an abandoned farmhouse.

The arrest follows an autopsy that found no gunshot wounds but severe injuries to the head, ribs, and facial fractures. Investigators estimate roughly a 50 percent chance Esposito was still alive when his body was doused in accelerant and set alight.

Meanwhile, the environmental agency ARPAC denied Esposito's claim that he had worked for them.
