Diego Forlán has been appointed interim head coach of Uruguay and permanent manager of the under-20 side, replacing Marcelo Bielsa following the national team's group-stage elimination from the FIFA World Cup last month. Bielsa stepped down after Uruguay failed to win a match in Group H, drawing with Cabo Verde and Saudi Arabia before losing to Spain.
Forlán, a 47-year-old former Inter Milan striker, will lead the senior team through March 2027 while overseeing six friendlies scheduled for September, October, and November. He will also guide the under-20 squad at the South American Championship in January 2027.
Uruguayan Football Association president Ignacio Alonso confirmed the appointments in a television interview, adding that a permanent senior manager will be named by early next year.
