Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha demanded Iran end its support for Russia's war during a tense phone call with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Monday, following Kyiv's July 25 strike on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea that left one sailor dead.
Araghchi demanded restitution for the losses and said Sybiha had assured him the attack was unintentional. Sybiha, for his part, warned against escalation and stated Ukraine's actions targeted Russian aggression. Separately, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar spoke with Sybiha about cooperation against Iran.
The diplomatic fallout coincided with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu making separate visits to the White House for meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump. Ukraine also secured support to domestically produce Patriot air defense systems, while Netanyahu discussed continuing the campaign against Iran with Trump.
