Two scuba divers died on Sunday after attempting an emergency ascent from roughly 80 metres depth in Lake Constance near the southern German town of Überlingen, police confirmed.

The 46-year-old woman and her 64-year-old partner had descended to about 80 metres before initiating the unexplained emergency ascent around 10:30 a.m. local time. The man lost consciousness during the ascent, while the woman became unresponsive shortly after reaching the surface. Despite resuscitation efforts, both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The water protection police have opened an investigation to determine what triggered the emergency ascent and the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths. The identities of the divers have not been released.
