Germany recorded 99 drowning deaths in June 2026, the highest monthly figure since 2003, when 107 people died, according to the German Life Saving Association (DLRG). The surge coincided with a historic heatwave that pushed temperatures to a record 41.7°C at Möckern-Drewitz on 27 June, driving crowds to lakes and rivers.
Men accounted for more than 90 percent of the victims, and 40 of the dead were under 30 years old. Another 35 were over 50. In Berlin alone, six people drowned across sites including the Schlachtensee, the Spree and the Urbanhafen — double the capital's toll from June 2025. Five of the Berlin victims were male, and four were teenagers.
The extreme heat also sparked wildfires and disrupted rail services across the country. Forecasters warn that another bout of tropical temperatures above 30°C is expected next week.
