Three people died in separate drowning incidents across Germany and Austria over the weekend, authorities said.
A 22-year-old man drowned Saturday afternoon in a lake in Rieste, near Osnabrück, after entering a roped-off swimming area despite being unable to swim. The water was roughly 2.5 metres deep. Two lifeguards pulled him ashore, but resuscitation attempts failed.
In Austria, a 65-year-old man died Sunday morning in Wörthersee after suddenly submerging while swimming. His wife raised the alarm. Fire service divers from Reifnitz recovered him from a depth of eight metres about half an hour later; he was transferred to a rescue helicopter after initial resuscitation efforts.
In Berlin, a person died at Halensee after going missing in the lake. Bathing guests and lido staff searched before fire divers located the victim following a brief underwater search. Resuscitation was attempted but discontinued by emergency medical staff.
