Peruvian authorities have renewed a national and international arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who is currently sheltering in Mexico under diplomatic asylum, following a judicial resolution issued on Aug. 14. Supreme Court Judge Juan Carlos Checkley ordered the warrant communicated to both national police and Interpol in Lima.
Chávez was sentenced to 11 years and five months in prison by the Supreme Court on Dec. 4, 2025. She had been sheltering at the Mexican embassy in Lima since November 2025 before eventually receiving diplomatic asylum and relocating to Mexico.
The renewal comes amid a shift in bilateral ties, as Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the resumption of diplomatic relations with Peru. Defense lawyer Raúl Noblecilla criticized the measure, arguing that the arrest cannot be carried out due to Chávez's protected asylum status.
