Mexico and Peru have agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations, ending a rift triggered by the asylum dispute over former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez. The reconciliation, announced in a joint statement on 7 August, follows the inauguration of Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori, whose government guaranteed safe passage for Chávez to leave the country.
Chávez, who sought refuge in the Mexican embassy in Lima in November 2025, has now flown to Mexico on a military aircraft, according to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Peru maintains the right to request her eventual extradition. Sheinbaum welcomed Chávez and reiterated support for ousted Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, who remains imprisoned.
Relations deteriorated after Castillo's failed 2022 attempt to dissolve congress. Both Castillo and Chávez were sentenced to more than 11 years in prison last November for rebellion. Chávez had been released on bail in September 2025 before seeking asylum.
