Venezuela and Dominican Republic agree to gradually restore diplomatic ties

Venezuela and the Dominican Republic have agreed to a gradual normalization of diplomatic and consular relations, the Venezuelan foreign ministry said in a joint statement on Sunday, ending a rupture that began when Caracas withdrew its diplomatic staff from Santo Domingo and six other nations in July 2024.

The split followed the Dominican Republic's decision to join international accusations of electoral fraud surrounding then-President Nicolás Maduro's re-election. Maduro was captured by U.S. forces in early January and taken to New York to face drug trafficking charges. The two countries had already restored consular services and air connections in February.

Interim President Delcy Rodríguez has moved to repair ties across the region, having reactivated relations with Chile and Peru in July.
