President-elect Keiko Fujimori unveiled the core of her incoming cabinet on Sunday, appointing Luis Galarreta as prime minister, Elmer Cuba as economy minister and Carlos Espá as foreign minister one day before her swearing-in.
Cuba, a former central bank director, has been tasked with curbing tax evasion and boosting productivity and employment. Fujimori will replace interim President José María Balcázar at a ceremony in Lima on Monday, governing until 2031 after narrowly defeating Roberto Sánchez in the 2026 runoff by roughly 50,000 votes.
Spain's King Felipe VI and Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani have already arrived in Lima, while several Latin American presidents are expected to attend. The incoming government faces deep challenges including chronic insecurity, political instability and the situation of Betssy Chávez sheltering at the Mexican embassy.
