Chilean authorities have arrested Nelson Haase Mazzei, a former army officer convicted of the kidnapping and murder of singer Víctor Jara and prison director Littré Quiroga Carvajal, ending a manhunt that began after the Supreme Court confirmed his sentence in 2023.

Haase Mazzei, sentenced to 25 years and two days in prison, was discovered hiding in a rural community in the Los Lagos region, roughly 850 kilometres south of Santiago, and taken into custody on Saturday.

Jara, one of Chile's most celebrated folk musicians, was detained on 12 September 1973 in the aftermath of the military coup. He was tortured at the stadium that now bears his name, and his body was found four days later. Quiroga Carvajal was also kidnapped and killed during the same period of political violence.
