Mexican authorities have arrested Ángel Aguirre, the former governor of Guerrero, accusing him of obstruction of justice and forced disappearance tied to the 2014 disappearance of 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers' College. Aguirre, now 70, governed the state until he resigned in October 2014, one month after the students vanished.
Attorney General Ernestina Godoy said two testimonies gathered this year between January and May pointed to Aguirre's role in ordering the destruction of security camera recordings from outside the Iguala Palace of Justice — footage authorities initially claimed did not exist. Aguirre has been transferred to the Altiplano maximum-security federal prison.
Independent investigations have concluded the students were attacked by a criminal group in collusion with police and elements of the military. Only bone fragments from three of the 43 victims have been recovered.
