OpenAI has rolled out Computer History, a new opt-in feature for the macOS version of ChatGPT that observes user activity across applications and websites to build a timeline of work performed. The tool, which will also arrive on Windows, aims to help the chatbot better understand individual workflows and suggest personalized automations.
The feature uses macOS accessibility systems to log clicks, typed text, keyboard shortcuts, and app-switching, though OpenAI says it does not capture images, video, or audio. Product lead Ari Weinstein noted that private browsing sessions are automatically excluded, and users can block specific apps or delete individual entries.
In a demonstration, the app retrieved a recently edited document and summarized a user's morning. Events are deleted from disk after 48 hours, and the feature is unavailable in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
