OpenAI is building its first proprietary hardware device, a screenless smart speaker powered by ChatGPT that can control home automation, play media, and answer questions with a personality designed to learn user habits over time. The device, expected to be unveiled later this year with a consumer launch planned for 2027, will feature mechanical elements that allow it to move independently, giving an impression of lifelike presence.
The project is being developed with the help of former Apple engineers who previously worked on iPhone and Mac products, a recruitment strategy that has drawn legal scrutiny. Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI last week alleging theft of trade secrets, including claims involving former Apple executive Tang Tan and another ex-employee. OpenAI has denied the allegations, stating its device is distinct from Apple products.
The legal dispute could delay both development and the commercial rollout of the hardware, which represents a significant strategic shift for OpenAI beyond software.
