ChatGPT returns to WhatsApp in Europe after antitrust order forces Meta to reopen platform

· Technology ITADEU

ChatGPT is once again available on WhatsApp across the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, ending a six-month absence that followed a policy change by Meta blocking rival AI assistants.

The return comes after the European Commission ordered Meta in June 2026 to restore access to competing chatbots through WhatsApp's business interface. Meta had introduced a blanket restriction on general-purpose AI services in January 2026, affecting not only OpenAI but also Microsoft and Perplexity. Emmanuel Marill, OpenAI's vice president and managing director for EMEA, announced the service's comeback, which will roll out gradually across the region.

Users can message ChatGPT directly through WhatsApp without a separate account, with support for text, images, voice messages and image generation.
