A contract worker in his 30s was killed and two colleagues were injured on Wednesday when heavy machinery crushed them at a Renfe train maintenance facility in Villaverde, southern Madrid. The accident occurred at approximately 14:20 local time on 22 July 2026, when the crew was handling a large metal component used in train upkeep.
The deceased was employed by Transervi, a subcontractor. The two surviving workers suffered fractures of varying severity and received medical attention at the scene.
The Madrid Municipal Police judicial coordination unit has opened an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Renfe has confirmed it will also conduct an internal inquiry into workplace safety procedures at the integral maintenance base.
