Mother and two children drown at Roncal dam in northern Spain

A woman and her two young children drowned on Wednesday at the Roncal dam on the Esca river in Navarre, northern Spain.

Emergency services were alerted at around 16:39 local time and a major response was mobilised, including firefighters from Navascués, a medical helicopter, ambulances, regional police and the Civil Guard. Despite rescue efforts, none of the three could be saved. The victims were residents of the Roncal Valley.

The local council declared three days of official mourning, lowering flags to half-mast and cancelling official events. The exact circumstances of the drownings remain under investigation.
