The bodies of two 11-year-old twin brothers have been recovered from the Ter river in Manlleu, a town in the province of Barcelona, after the boys failed to return home from an evening football game on Monday.
The Mossos d'Esquadra regional police joined the search early Tuesday using drone and underwater units after local police raised the alarm around 1 a.m. A first body was found at approximately 1 p.m. and a second about an hour later, both in the riverbed. The description of the twins, whose family is originally from Ghana, matches that of the recovered bodies, and the remains have been transferred for autopsy to confirm identification.
Investigators say initial evidence points to an accidental drowning. The Manlleu town council has declared two days of official mourning and scheduled a minute of silence for Wednesday evening.
