Two inmates killed by cellmate at psychiatric prison hospital in Seville

· Society ESP

Two inmates were killed early on Sunday by a cellmate at the Psychiatric Penitentiary Hospital in Seville, in what authorities are investigating as a double homicide. A guard discovered the bodies shortly after 1:00 a.m. on 13 July in residential module three of the facility.

The suspected attacker, a 26-year-old Gambian national, shared the cell with the two victims, aged 25 and 54. One victim suffered severe head injuries while the other was asphyxiated in bed, and investigators are working with the hypothesis that the killings involved both strangulation and blunt-force blows. The suspect was transferred to the facility's acute-care ward.

Government Deputy Delegate Francisco Toscano confirmed the double homicide. All three men were serving security measures at the institution. The prison officers' union denounced systemic shortcomings in Spain's treatment of inmates with mental health conditions.
