Three-storey building collapses in eastern Spain after last-minute evacuation

A three-storey residential building collapsed early on July 15 in Benetússer, Valencia, shortly after all occupants were evacuated, leaving no one injured.

The alarm was raised at 22:01 on July 14 when neighbours reported cracks and unusual noises in the building, which stood adjacent to an active construction site. Fire crews from Torrent and Catarroja responded and oversaw the evacuation. Chief inspector Jorge Gil said the structure gave way one to two minutes after the last resident was cleared. A neighbouring building was also evacuated as a precaution.

Investigators noted that several foundations at the adjacent construction site had been underpinned, a detail likely central to determining the cause. Mayor Eva Sanz Portero and regional official Juan Carlos Valderrama visited the scene.
