Munich marked the tenth anniversary of the racist attack at the Olympia-Einkaufszentrum on Wednesday with speeches, a city-wide minute of silence and a call from President Frank-Walter Steinmeier for firmer action against racism.
Steinmeier, Bavarian state parliament president Ilse Aigner and Munich Mayor Dominik Krause spoke at the memorial near the shopping centre, where relatives of the victims also addressed the gathering. At 17:51, the exact time of the shooting a decade earlier, trams, buses and subway trains halted for a minute. State premier Markus Söder ordered mourning flags on all Bavarian government buildings.
On 22 July 2016, an 18-year-old gunman killed nine people of Turkish, Greek, Albanian and Sinti and Roma heritage before taking his own life. Authorities initially classified the attack as a rampage and only recognised its far-right motivation in October 2019. Victims' families are demanding a parliamentary inquiry into whether the killings could have been prevented.
