A scuffle erupted at Germany's official memorial for the failed 20 July plot against Adolf Hitler on Monday when a relative of resistance figure Dietrich Bonhoeffer tried to remove a wreath laid by the far-right Alternative for Germany parliamentary group at the Bendlerblock in Berlin.
Tobias Korenke, a great-nephew of Bonhoeffer, attempted to take away the AfD's wreath during the ceremony marking the anniversary of Claus von Stauffenberg's 1944 assassination attempt. Security staff intervened, and the wreath was damaged in the ensuing tussle.
Family Minister Karin Prien of the Christian Democratic Union delivered the keynote address, noting that her own great-grandmother was murdered at the Sobibor extermination camp. A solemn swearing-in ceremony for 240 Bundeswehr recruits was scheduled for the afternoon at the same site.
