Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has indicated he intends to retire at the end of the 2026-27 season, telling reporters at the club’s training camp in Rottach-Egern that it looks “very likely” he will stop playing next summer. Neuer, who extended his contract in May 2026, acknowledged he would have retired in “85 percent of cases” without renewed motivation. The 39-year-old enters his 21st professional season and 16th at Bayern, having endured multiple injuries last campaign.
Neuer has won 13 Bundesliga titles, seven German Cups and two Champions League trophies with Bayern since joining from Schalke, amassing 389 appearances, and lifted the World Cup with Germany in 2014. Jonas Urbig, who made 14 league appearances last season, is viewed as his successor.
Bayern, the reigning domestic double winners, opened preseason preparations at Lake Tegernsee and face local side FC Rottach-Egern on July 30.
