A 33-year-old man was pronounced dead Tuesday morning at The Valley, the home stadium of Charlton Athletic in south-east London, after emergency services responded to welfare concerns at the venue.
Detectives are examining whether the man fell from height in the early hours of Monday. The Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service were called to the ground following reports of a person in distress, but the man was declared dead at the scene. The death remains under investigation, with the force logging the incident under reference 2809/18AUG.
Charlton Athletic said it was cooperating with the police inquiry and expressed its deepest sympathies to the man's family. The club relocated Tuesday's under-21 match against Bolton from The Valley to its Sparrows Lane training ground. The discovery came days after Charlton opened its Championship campaign with a 2-1 victory over Derby County at the same stadium on Saturday.
