A 75-year-old man has been extradited from Australia to Northern Ireland to face 17 charges of historical sexual offences, including 14 counts of indecent assault on a female and three counts of gross indecency with a child.

The alleged offences span from January 1969 to March 1983 and involved two family members in Belfast. The accused was initially arrested in Victoria, Australia, in 2023 and returned to Northern Ireland on Wednesday following cooperation between the UK Home Office and Australian authorities.

He appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court via video-link from police custody, where he did not speak during proceedings. The defendant was remanded in custody until 20 August when the case is next scheduled to be heard.
