Barcelona have officially confirmed the season-long loan of Ronald Araujo to Liverpool until June 2027, with the 27-year-old accepting a pay cut and taking the number 33 shirt after Liverpool agreed to cover his wages in full. The buy option stands at approximately 55 million euros (£47.1m).

Araujo, who made 213 first-team appearances and won three La Liga titles since joining from Uruguayan side Boston River in 2018, finished last season as Barcelona captain under Hansi Flick, making 38 appearances across all competitions. He was granted a leave of absence to prioritise his mental health last season following a Champions League red card against Chelsea but returned to feature regularly in the second half of the campaign.

The versatile defender, who can also operate at right-back and was part of Uruguay's 2026 World Cup squad, used to watch Luis Suarez play for Liverpool from his homeland. Darwin Nunez welcomed his compatriot on social media. Liverpool begin their Premier League season at Newcastle United on 23 August.
