King Harald V of Norway has been admitted to the National Hospital in Oslo following a medical examination on Monday afternoon, the royal court confirmed. The 87-year-old monarch has been placed on sick leave for two weeks, with Crown Prince Haakon stepping in as regent during his absence.
The hospitalisation comes after weeks of cortisone treatment for haemolytic anaemia, a blood disorder. Fluid retention linked to the condition required hospital-based care, according to Norwegian media. The king was hospitalised earlier this August for a scheduled check-up.
King Harald's health has drawn attention this year. In February, he was treated for a skin infection and dehydration while holidaying in Tenerife, and later received a pacemaker. He is due to visit municipalities in Telemark and Trøndelag in the coming months.
