Italy's Supreme Court of Cassation is deliberating the final appeal of Mario Roggero, a jeweler sentenced to 14 years and nine months in prison for fatally shooting two men during a robbery at his shop, with a ruling expected later today.
Prosecutors have asked the court to uphold the conviction, which was handed down by a Turin appellate court last December. Roggero was found guilty of killing Giuseppe Mazzarino and Andrea Spinelli and wounding a third assailant after the three stormed his jewelry store in Grinzane Cavour on 28 April 2021.
The case drew national attention and sparked a public debate over self-defense and the limits of lethal force against intruders in Italy. The Cassation court's decision will be the final word in the criminal proceedings.
