Italian jeweler Roggero enters prison after wife files pardon request

· Society ITA

Mario Roggero, the 72-year-old Italian jeweler whose fatal shooting of two robbers ignited a national debate on self-defense, surrendered to authorities and entered Bollate prison on Thursday after the Supreme Court of Cassation rejected his final appeal and upheld a 14-year, nine-month sentence.

The Asti prosecutor's office issued an arrest order following the Cassation ruling, prompting Roggero to turn himself in. His wife, Mariangela Sandrone, filed a formal request for a presidential pardon on Thursday, and Justice Minister Carlo Nordio has opened a preliminary review of the application.

Roggero killed two men and wounded a third during an armed robbery at his shop in Grinzane Cavour on 28 April 2021, after the Cassation confirmed his conviction for the incident.
