An Italian court has acquitted a 67-year-old woman of murdering her 93-year-old mother, ruling she was unable to understand or will her actions at the time of the killing.
The Court of Assizes in Arezzo found Giuseppina Martin not guilty in the death of Mirella Del Puglia, which occurred on the night of March 8–9, 2025, in San Giovanni Valdarno. Presiding judge Annamaria Loprete accepted the defence's argument of total mental incapacity, contradicting prosecutor Giorgio Martano, who had sought a 12-year sentence on grounds of diminished mental capacity. Defence lawyer Alessia Ariano successfully argued that a psychiatric evaluation supported the full incapacity finding.
The court has 90 days to file its written reasoning for the verdict.
