Francesco Guccini, one of Italy’s most celebrated singer-songwriters, died on Thursday at the age of 86 in Pavana, a village in the Apennines near Pistoia. His family said the funeral will be strictly private, with a public memorial ceremony planned for September.
Born in Modena on 14 June 1940, Guccini released his debut album Folk Beat n°1 in 1967 and went on to produce 16 studio and collection albums over a career spanning five decades. Landmark releases included Radici in 1972 and Via Paolo Fabbri 43 in 1976. He also pursued writing, debuting as an author in 1989 with Cròniche epafàniche, and released his final albums in 2022 and 2023.
In Bologna, fans gathered on Via Paolo Fabbri 43 to leave flowers and messages, the street immortalised in one of his most famous albums, as his songs played aloud in tribute.
