Peppino Di Capri, the twice-winning Sanremo Festival vocalist who opened the Beatles' only Italian tour, died on Saturday at the age of 87. Born Giuseppe Faiella on the island of Capri in 1939, he became one of Italy's most enduring pop performers across a career spanning more than six decades.
Di Capri opened three Beatles concerts across Italy in June 1965, performing at Milan's Vigorelli Velodrome, Genoa's Palasport and Rome's Teatro Adriano — the only shows the British group ever played in the country.
His personal life included a 1961 marriage to Roberta Stoppa, with whom he had a son, Igor, before their 1976 divorce. He later married Giuliana Gagliardi in 1978; she died in 2019.
