Mary de Rachewiltz, the only daughter of poet Ezra Pound who brought his epic Cantos to Italian readers, died July 24 in Merano, Italy. She was 101.
Born in Bressanone in 1925 to Pound and violinist Olga Rudge, de Rachewiltz spent much of her life in South Tyrol. She married Prince Boris de Rachewiltz in 1946 and later tended her father's archive at Brunnenburg Castle, where Pound himself lived from 1958 until near the end of his life. Her complete Italian translation of the Cantos was published by Mondadori in 1985, earning her the Monselice Prize for translation. She was also the author of the 1973 memoir Discrezioni: Storia di un'educazione.
Last year, the Palais Manning Museum in Merano honoured her with an exhibition titled Mary's Dream. Portrait of a Lady.
